Students — Assessment

photo of adolescentsDifficulties with attention, executive functions and learning can happen for a lot of different reasons, and different problems require different solutions.  Whatever the reason, if ignored or inappropriately remediated, they can lead to failures that appear unexplainable, problems with self-esteem, school avoidance and inappropriate difficulties with authority.  They also do not always present early on.  Sometimes they are not immediately apparent because the demands that students experience change and for awhile coping mechanisms may hide problems; in other words, it isn’t the individual who changes, but the circumstances.  Other times, they may represent problems in the social or academic environment that are interfering with a student’s life or ability to perform optimally.  Understanding the basis of problems makes addressing them much easier.

We do thorough, thoughtful evaluations of students age 12 through University that include all of the requirements of academic institutions and testing companies.  However, the goal is to give our clients a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses and forces at work that contribute to their experiences, and where there are problems, to provide them with solutions.

A full evaluation can run between five and eight hours of face to face time. Depending on the circumstances, not everyone requires the time and expense involved in testing, so, unless it is clear that it is necessary, we will ask you to come in for an initial interview. If testing is necessary, it is usually scheduled over two or three sessions. When it is done, you should get the results within two to three weeks; this involves a written report as well as an in-person feedback session and further help as you need it.
